A dog, a rifle, and a good knife.
We headed out an hour and a half before sunrise, headed off into the woods an laid down in the crook of a fallen pine. We laid there for three hours, watching and listening, staying still even as the sleet began falling even though there would be few critters out today.
It covered us, head to toe, nose to tail, bore to bitch-pad. My new rifle was put to its first real test, weather resistance. The 1-piece scope kept the moisture out very nicely, though it was a bit quick to frigg up.

After a good while in the cold and rain and sleet, it was time to see just how well it stayed on the mark in poor conditions.
Seeing a squirrel about 250 yards out, up in an oak, I lined him up in my now foggy scope, and began to squeeze.
Numb fingers are great to shoot with, its very hard to jerk the trigger all all you can really do is squeeze it off. I saw a point an inch below his right shoulder, thats where my bullet would hit.

The trigger broke, the blast sent leaves flying and branches shuddering in its wake. I moved with the recoil, absorbing and returning to the same point of aim right in time to see the squirrel dropping.

When I got to the squirrel I saw that I pegged him at the very point I intended, making it the second kill with that rifle, with the second shot(not counting the shots on targets)

The squirrel wasnt in to bad a shape, I learned a trick to hunting small game with a too-large rifle a long time ago, aim for the points of least resistance to avoid severe damage.

I used Federal 100gr .243 WIN "The Cheap Stuff"

I always have my USMC Ka-bar, and I have a Smith and Wesson boot knife that is a very nice knife.
Gotta love a good dog, a steady rifle, and a well made knife :)
